Andrew Moulds a Bright Future in Engineering!

04 July 2011

A 17-year-old who dropped out of college has landed a job and a promising future thanks to a pioneering training programme.

A two-week Prince’s Trust ‘Get Into Engineering’ course at Brinsworth Training, South Yorkshire’s leading engineering and manufacturing training provider, convinced Andrew Pearson, of East Dene, Rotherham, that engineering was the career he wanted to follow.

After completing the Prince’s Trust scheme, Andrew landed a place on a 14-week course specially designed by Brinsworth Training to give young people without qualifications an opportunity to build up their engineering foundation skills.

And now he has been offered an apprenticeship at Active Moulds Ltd., of Dinnington, Sheffield.

Andrew said: “I realise how fortunate I am to be in full-time employment because of the course, particularly at a time when there aren’t many jobs around. And I’m absolutely determined to make the best of the opportunity. “I love the job and realised as soon as I went on the Prince’s Trust taster course that engineering was the way forward for me. It was a lucky break for me. When I decided to leave college because I felt I wasn’t getting anywhere, I didn’t really know what the future held.”

The 14-week programme gave Andrew an NVQ Level Two in engineering and he will soon be studying for Level Three on a day release basis. As well as giving him an introduction to the engineering industry, the Prince’s Trust course provided the skills and confidence he needed to turn his life around. More than three in four young people on Prince’s Trust schemes move into work, education or training.

Paul Reeves, Brinsworth Training’s business development director, said: “We are delighted Andrew has found a full-time job. One of the advantages of the course is that attendance records, attitude, aptitude and skills levels are measured every week and this is useful information for potential employers to have.”

And Andrew is already making a good impression at Active Moulds, who make moulds for the blockpaving industry from their base on Brooklands Park Industrial Estate, Dinnington.

Craig Trembath, workshop manager, said: “Andrew is doing very well and giving us 100 per cent and more. He is keen to learn, asking lots of relevant questions and showing a lot of promise.  It’s obvious that the course at Brinsworth Training has given him a good, sound foundation in engineering basics.”

The Prince’s Trust will be running, with Brinsworth Training, another ‘Get Into Engineering’ course for unemployed young people in Rotherham from July 11-22.

Founded in 1999, Brinsworth Training is a nationally recognised Centre of Vocational Excellence and in 2006 became one of the Institute of Leadership and Management’s 2,000 worldwide accredited delivery centres.

It prides itself on providing hands-on, practical and affordable training solutions to meet the needs of learners, potential employers and technical advancements required by the sector.

The company, based in what was British Steel’s Templeborough melting shop, is a key partner in initiatives spearheaded by leading manufacturing businesses such as DavyMarkham, Firth Rixson and Newburgh Engineering to create advanced apprenticeships which meet the needs of modern industry.

The company has seen major growth in the number of engineering apprentices it trains in recent years. It helps young people into engineering and manufacturing by working with schools, Business and Education South Yorkshire, the Industrial Trust and the Prince’s Trust and also assists redundant adults to retrain, re-skill and return to work.
