CENTRE LATHE TURNING INTRODUCTORY

This course is designed for anyone who wants to become a machinist on a centre lathe. This course is delivered by our friendly qualified professional training staff. You will be working in newly refurbished pleasing environment training on new machines recently installed. This course is mainly hands on with a mix of theory work to provide a comprehensive learning package.



  • Workshop and machine safety
  • Familiarisation of machine controls
  • How to interpret and work to engineering drawings
  • Use of three jaw self centring chuck and four jaw independent chuck
  • Tool selection – correct mounting methods and their uses
  • Procedures for facing off and turning diameters
  • Use of precision measuring equipment – how to read, check for accuracy and recalibrate them
  • Working to close tolerances and producing quality surface finishes
  • Use of roughing and finishing cuts
  • How to tap, ream, drill, undercut, part off and produce external and internal threads
  • Machining ferrous and non ferrous metals
  • Setting work running true in a four jaw chuck using various methods for both hot rolled and cold rolled bar – tool point, chalk and dti methods


Qualification : All successful candidates upon completion will receive the Centre Certificate of Competence in Centre Lathe Turning identifying training covered


For Your Information : Brinsworth Training has the flexibility to facilitate your requirements as an organisation or individual Completion of this course should provide you with enough knowledge and experience to find work as a basic machinist on a centre lathe with development to a semi skilled standard Please bring pen and paper and wear/bring with you PPE (personal protective equipment) protective clothing, eye wear, gloves etc and steel toecap boots for the workshop activities. Brinsworth can supply if needed hats, gloves and glasses


This course is based at our main engineering training facility, located just off the M1 J34 in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Ideally situated for access from Barnsley, Sheffield, Doncaster or Rotherham.
